Baritú National Park

There is a place that protects more than seventy thousand hectares of Yungas. Go around its valleys, and gaze at the mountain tops covered with vegetation. Start your journey at the bottom level: the Pedemontana Jungle. Go up to the Montana jungle, where the plants cover tree branches and hang like curtains. Further up, discover the Montano Forest, where humidity increases and you can almost touch the clouds.

Enjoy a natural environment, almost untouched, which is the habitat of diverse species: the yaguareté (jaguar) and the cougar, the carpincho and the fox, the corzuela and the mount pig, the anteater and the tapir, the squirrel and the capuchin monkey. Watch rivers and streams that are home to sábalos and bogas, catfish and dolphin fish, yuscas and suckermouth catfish. Walk through the paths while watching crested eagles, slender-tailed woodstars and yungas red-bellied toads. A world of nature is waiting for you in the sub-Andean hills of Salta.

Geographic location: Province of Salta.

How to get there: From Los Toldos, in the North of the province. To get to this place, go by land through the province of Jujuy, cross the border limit with Bolivia in Aguas Blancas, enter the Argentine territory again, and take Ruta Panamericana N°1 to Los Toldos.  

Area: 720 sq km

Altitude: Between 1,800 and 2,000 meters above sea level.

Climate: Subtropical with dry season. The average temperature is 21ºC, with lows of – 7ºC and highs of 39ºC. The rainy season is between November and April.

Recommended length of stay: 2 to 3 days.

Recommended clothing and gear: Light clothes, insect repellent.

What to do: Trekking, hiking and wildlife watching. The park has a camping area.

Tips:  In summertime, it is advisable to ride on four-wheel drive vehicles, due to the muddy roads. It is also recommended to travel during the day to appreciate the landscape, and for animal crossing precaution.
