La Quiaca, Jujuy

In the northernmost end of Argentina, where Ruta 40 ends, an adventure in the Puna begins.

Geographic location: Province of Jujuy, north of Argentina.

How to get there: La Quiaca is located at the north end of our country. It can be accessed via Ruta Nacional 9.

Altitude: 3,442 meters above sea level (average altitude)

Climate: steppe and semi-arid.

Recommended length of stay: 1 to 2 days.

Recommended clothing and gear: warm clothes, appropriate for wide temperature changes as a result of the height. Wear sunscreen. 

Tips: walk carefully and drink lots of water to avoid problems as a result of the height. 

 

Can you picture a city with no undulations but lying over three thousand four hundred meters high? Get your feet going in La Quiaca. Discover the charm of this place next to the Puna. Explore a territory crossed by ravines and marked by history. Follow the footsteps of ancient traditions and native settlers who perpetuated the Pre-Colombian cultures of the region.

Treat yourself to a tour around the city streets. Talk to the villagers. Visit the central market. Discover the Manka Fest [Manka Fiesta] or Fiesta de la Olla: an ancient celebration which vindicates the barter culture. Do you feel like walking in the surrounding areas? Visit Yavi and Humahuaca, Santa Catalina and Laguna de los Pozuelos. And if you head north, cross the international bridge that will take you to the city of Villazón, in Bolivia. Live it all in the province of Jujuy.
