Geographic location: North region of the province of Jujuy.
How to get here: via Ruta Nacional 9 from San Salvador de Jujuy (42 km) and from the city of Salta (165 km).
Area: 155 km
Altitude: 1,600 and 4,500 meters above sea level.
Climate: Semiarid with dry season (winter). The prevailing North-South orientation of the valleys influences the rainfall distribution. The rain season is December through March.
Ideal time of the year: April through November, dry season.
Recommended length of stay 5 to 7 days.
Recommended clothing: in winter (July through September), take warm clothes. In summer (December through March), a light jacket to wear at night will be enough. Also, take comfortable preferably light-colored clothes, repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or cap, and appropriate footwear according to the activity.
What to do: Go horseback riding (generally setting off in Tilcara), visit Salinas Grandes (from Purmamarca), go sandboarding in Abra Pampa, enjoy llama caravans, trekking and mountaineering.
Tips: ideal place to buy local pottery, gold or silverwork from Jujuy, woven textiles and crafts. Some of the most renowned events are: January Tilcareño, Pachamama ceremony, Jujuy Carnival (one of the most significant carnivals in the country), Copleros meetings, Holy Week celebrations in Tilcara and Tumbaya,, and the Inti Raymi celebration.
