The weather in Santa Cruz
El Chaltén is in the southwest of the province of Santa Cruz, in southern Patagonia. Because of this, the weather is generally cold almost all year round. During the Argentine summer, from December to March, temperatures are warmer and you can even wear something light.
However, for the rest of the year it is advisable to wear a coat, especially if you want to go out at night. Even during the Argentine winter -from June to September- there can be heavy frosts and snowfall.
In a nutshell, the best season to go to El Chaltén is from October to April.

El Chaltén: important information
Although entrance to the town is free, you have to pay a ticket to have access to the trails that go to Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, among other places of interest. Tickets must be purchased on the National Parks website
There are three points of entry nowadays:
Portal Los Cóndores: located before the access to the town, from where trails start to the Mirador de Los Cóndores and de las Águilas; Loma del Pliegue Tumbado and Laguna Toro.
Portal Base Fitz Roy: here is the beginning of the trails that take you to Cerro Torre (a fork has recently been made), Laguna de los Tres (an imposing viewpoint of Fitz Roy) and the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall, respectively.
Portal Río Eléctrico: located about 16 kilometers from El Chaltén, on Provincial Route 41. From this point you can reach Piedra del Fraile and it is also another alternative to access the Piedras Blancas Glacier Viewpoint, Poincenot and Laguna de los Tres.
