Esteros del Iberá Welcomes a New Jaguar
Raised in the heart of Argentina's Chaco region, Takajay, a young jaguar born in El Impenetrable National Park, now roams freely in Esteros del Iberá, in the province of Corrientes, Argentina, strengthening biodiversity and marking a new chapter in the restoration of this iconic species.
Takajay: A Jaguar Making History
Takajay, a jaguar born in El Impenetrable National Park in Chaco, was recently released in Esteros del Iberá as part of an ambitious Rewilding Argentina project. This iconic feline had disappeared from Corrientes for decades, but thanks to joint efforts, today a population of at least 35 jaguars lives freely in this ecosystem.
Takajay, whose name means "strong and brave" in the Wichí language, brings hope for greater genetic diversity and the strengthening of this reintroduced population. His story is an example of Argentina's commitment to conservation and biodiversity.
